Tyrus Thomas for sale; trade on the horizon...Don't buy it

I don't get showcasing. Never did.

If your profession is to scout players, knowing their strengths and weaknesses, then why would a three-game stretch with extended minutes change anything?

The Chicago Sun-Times reported today that Thomas could be shipped if John Paxson goes forward with a trade some time soon.

And what would they get? A journey-man big-man with average scoring ability and less than stellar defense? Sounds like Drew Gooden. A pair of second-rounders?

Paxson told ESPN 1000 that he is working on a trade but didn't include any details, admitting that Rose is the star and everyone else is the sticky bottle in the condiment drawer.

We'll hang on to them because we bought them already...sorry, for explaining the metaphor.

But I don't buy it. I'm hardly a Thomas apologist. He possesses the intellect of a doorknob. He's incredibly sensitive, with little understanding of the game.

Yet, in the past two weeks, we've seen those patented flashes. He's not traveling to Boston to face the Celtics Friday because he suffered a mild concussion this week.

So, this hardly seems like the right move to ship him out when he's only 22. Here's how I see it: The team will be remodeled within just a few years, save for Rose, and Thomas should be 25 by that time. That's still young.

He could be a valuable role player.

No, he'll never be Amare. But he could be Tyson Chandler, Hakeem Warrick, Marvin Williams or even Josh Smith.

He has played noticeably better this past week because he is sprinting. Seems simple. But it's a concept he has never grasped. I'm willing to wait for someone like him.

Joakim Noah? I'll take a free meal.

The real question could be: Is Ben Gordon or Larry Hughes on the block?

We know Gordon has gotten a bad rap in the past year or so for his decision-making and height, but he is the most valuable Bull next to Rose. He needs to agree to a trade, which makes it difficult, but he is certainly worth moving before his contract expires.

Hughes has played well, and I'm still surprised how useful he's been. But there's a glut of guards, and Kirk Hinrich has begun working out. It would be a royal mess with DNP's to a $11 million player.

The bottom line: Gordon, Hughes, Hinrich or Andres Nocioni have to be the key players in the proposal to make any sense.

But again, who said this organization often makes any sense?
